AI, Radio Astronomy and Life Beyond Earth - A Talk with Miro Saide

The Scientific Director of the Mozambican Astronomy Association, Ramiro Saide (Miro Saide), will speak at a Microsoft seminar on the theme: "AI, Radio Astronomy and Life Beyond Earth", where he will discuss his research in radio astronomy, Artificial Intelligence, and the search for life beyond Earth, exploring how these three fields intersect in modern scientific research. Modern radio astronomy produces extraordinary amounts of data. A single observation campaign can generate tens to hundreds of terabytes of data, while large projects and scientific archives can reach petabyte scale (millions of gigabytes). Given this volume of information, Artificial Intelligence becomes an essential tool for processing large datasets, identifying patterns, distinguishing interference produced by human technologies, and searching for scientific signals of interest that would be extremely difficult to detect using traditional methods. For Mozambique, this field also represents a strategic opportunity. Working with radio astronomy and large volumes of data makes it possible to develop skills in Artificial Intelligence, data science, high-performance computing, engineering, and astronomy, contributing to training a new generation of scientists and engineers and strengthening Mozambique's and Africa's participation in global science and technology.
